What to watch for

This calculator assumes one refrigerant in one circuit, and does not account for hermetically sealed equipment, multiple circuits or exemptions for specific applications. Use it to orient yourself, not as evidence. If in doubt, the text of the regulation prevails and your certification body is the place to ask.

How the calculation works

How do you calculate CO₂ equivalent?
Charge in kilograms × the refrigerant’s GWP ÷ 1000 = tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. For 8 kg of R410A (GWP 2088) that is 16.7 tonnes.
Why are HFOs measured in kilograms?
Because their GWP is so low that a CO₂-equivalent threshold would never be reached. Unsaturated HFCs and HCFCs therefore use a 1 kilogram threshold.
When may the interval double?
When a leakage detection system alerts the operator or the servicing company to a leak. From 500 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, or 100 kg for Annex II substances, such a system is mandatory anyway.
